AR: Inspiration Research

Inspiration from lesson

In the lesson we looked closely at multiple examples of existing music videos to gain inspiration of directions we can go in. The main types of music video are disjunctive, narrative, conceptual and performance.

Massive Attack - Live With Me (2010)

This Music Video directed by Jonathan Glazer is a disjunctive narrative piece as it contains a storyline following one female character spiralling down an alcohol infused nightmarish experience, however this has no relation to the song. Instead the song matches the mood of the video and they compliment each other affecting the audience in a very emotive, depressing way. The video gives the song repeatability as a mood is felt every time the song is heard because it reminds the audience of the story in the video. What I like about this type of video is that it is daring enough to explore a tangent completely off topic but still make a link through atmosphere and emotion.

Inspiration from pop genre

One of our groups initial ideas for a location is in a large field and to have one actress representing the artist dancing and lip synching in the field. In 'Come & Get It' by Selena Gomez, a major contributor to todays female pop music, one of the locations used is a field so I have studied this video for further ideas.

Selena Gomez - Come & Get It (2013)

This music video is completely performance which is one of the styles we would definitely like to use as it is generic of pop to see the artist performing to the audience. The artist appears beautiful, in estrange exotic locations that also emanate the same beauty showing the extraordinary nature of the artist.

The mountainous location with the beautiful flowered field presents a great location for a female pop artists as it shows their spiritual, natural beauty and emphasises femininity and freedom. The artist is positioned in the centre of a long shot frame, slowly dancing in an evocative way implying fetishism and 'soft porn' however her long, floaty dark dress suggests the opposite as it is concealing.

In some shots at the field location Gomez is singing along with the lyrics, looking intensely into the camera, in others she is more distant, dancing and moving around the frame and away from the camera. This conforms to Dyers paradox that an artist is simultaneously absent and present. This editing style of jumping between shots with lip synching and shots without could be something we adopt.

An interesting feature of the video is how multiple times the artist is reflected either in post production with the use of mirrors or in pro-filmic effects where a ghosting effect has layered the same image twice, just slightly out of place with the other. I really like this effect as by multiplying the artist it emphasises their power and beauty and it is a very visually pleasing stylistic effect.
