CB: Summary of todays lesson

Today we looked at four music videos as a group and analysed them briefly on what we thought the concept was and how this was communicated throughout the video. The two that I thought were the most effective were:

Helicopter Parents (Scams)

I liked the split screen technique at the beginning of the video as it gave me more than one thing to focus on at a time even though the screen displayed an image of the same person. This made it exciting to watch from the very beginning. I also liked the use of illuminous skeleton face paints lit under a UV light, as it separated the violet - blue colour from the dull orange background and made them stand out. The split screen technique further adds layers in the video when we can see different members of the band play their instruments, e.g. guitar and drums. I think it makes the performance more visually interesting as we are seeing the band in 3 alternating directions and are not missing out on the action occurring within the video.

The Only Game (Torgny)

I liked the use of different camera angles in this video, as it is constantly changing in order to maintain the audiences attention and is encouraging them to gain insight (and be a part of) the narrative of car racing. It also focuses on rebellious motifs such as drinking alcohol and smoking which are issues commonly associated with car racing, however it doesn't include stereotyped characters such as teenagers within the video which could be argued as unusual.

  1. Techniques you have identified such as the split screen would work really well for our performance/conceptual music video so that should definitely be something we try when editing our footage we take on the Brighton recce.
