CB: Responding to Track

Chosen Track: Night Owls Early Birds (Foxes, 2014)

What is the genre of the track? How can you tell?
The genre of this track is pop. This is identified by conventional characteristics that are illustrated through synaesthesia, by listening to the sound track and lyrics of the song. In doing so, we can recognise that the song uses dance orientated beats and rhythms with an aim to encourage dancing from an audience (which is a typical feature of the pop genre).

Do you think this track represents a high or lo fi video? why?
I think this track represents a high fi video as it conforms to the pop genre, which is known for manipulating high quality equipment in order to receive a smooth outcome that provides repeatability for an audience.

What videos would be comparable? Publish and label some interesting stills from the same genre.
Videos such as 'Smile' by Lily Allen, 'We Found Love' by Rihanna and 'How We Do' by Rita Ora would all be comparable to the type of video we could create to the Foxes track. This is because we want to make our music video amplified, in supplying it with an art feel instead of containing a narrative. From the following stills, they each resemble a feature which we could possibly consider to incorporate. For example, the brightly coloured background is as an aspect of mise en scene that we could easily replicate to appear within our music video.

Give an outline of a treatment.
  • amplified
  • art
  • paint splattered on walls
  • graffiti
  • parallel lines of action
  • animal masks to relate to the lyrics - 'owls' 'birds'
  • close ups of objects
  • close up of actors and smeared make up

Identify suitable locations for filming particular sequences of the music.
  • Street - an actor (preferably a girl) walking home from a one night stand wearing the same dress as she wore the previous night.
  • Field - actor in isolation, at one with nature and the animals, running in slow motion.
  • Alley or train station - graffiti shots to add visual content to the video and provide colour.
  • Bedroom - to possibly contrast two different worlds of the actor

Consider grain of voice. What characters would you use?
As the artist of the track is female, I would use female characters to appear mainly within the video as it would create the illusion that the character is singing their inner thoughts. Also, if we wanted the characters to mime some of the lyrics it would work better to the track if they were female. Due to the genre of the track being pop and having a mature sound, I would include young females aged between 17-24 to act within the music video.

What pro-filmic and post-production special effects would be suitable?
Post production effects such as slow motioning a shot and changing the lighting would be suitable for the style and look we want to create. By slow motioning a shot we will be able to manipulate the time frame of the song by slowing it down at points and then speeding it up again to achieve visceral pleasure on the audience. Also, by adapting the lighting of our shots will provide a fun and quirky feel that is important for a pop music video to have, in order to maintain the aim of getting people to engage with the lyrics and dance. For example, we could use the negative lighting effect which creates a distorted look and separates the music industry from reality, making the video and characters within it extraordinary.

Who else would you need to 'employ' to help you with this production?
To help me with the production of the music video, I would need to employ various female actors to feature in it and a 'second eye' to help me check over the footage to see what works well and what doesn't.
